Wood Belly and The Great Salmon Famine
This past Friday, we had Wood Belly and The Great Salmon Famine at the Mish for an incredible co-headlined, sold-out night! The weather was perfect and everyone was ready to get down.
The Great Salmon Famine started off the night with incredible jammed out and funky tunes. The band is composed of five members who each bring their own unique contribution and energy to the group. The band was ready to play a great socially-distant show and even gave me a sticker which said “get down responsibly.”
Their music ranged from super funky to even a little “weird,”as described by the band, when they played a song which incorporated circus music and distinct vocals.
After their performance, Wood Belly took the stage to continue the party with some spectacular traditional acoustic bluegrass tunes. The local Front Range group consists of Christ Weist (mandolin), Craig Patterson (guitar), Chris Zink (dobro), Aaron McCloskey (banjo), and Taylor Shuck (bass).
The group has been playing their music together for a while, and recently won the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition in 2018. Although they have a traditional bluegrass sound, they incorporate modern sounds, energy, and impressive songwriting.
Before the show Wood Belly’s bass player, Taylor Shuck, took a break to enjoy some fishing.
He ditched his bass for a bit and grabbed his fishing gear to set up right behind the stage in the Poudre River.
As a big bluegrass and funk fan, seeing the two bands was a highlight of the season for me. Wood Belly’s picking and The Great Salmon Famine’s improvisational music kept me and the whole crowd dancing throughout the night.
