Warmer Waters: Goth Babe at The Mish | August 19th
On Wednesday, August 19th the Mishawaka was graced with the presence of Goth Babe, with JW Francis opening up the night. This show was unique, with a mix of acoustic performances, a documentary, Q&A, and an unplugged portion where the band came into the audience at the end of the show. It was a drizzly day in Bellvue, Colorado, followed by a double rainbow before the artists took the stage.

After the founder of Goth Babe, Griff Washburn, and his crew arrived, they went right to the Poudre river to indulge in some fishing. A pre-show playlist featuring artists like Mazzy Star and Joni Mithcell got the crowd moving and grooving before music began.

JW Francis hopped on stage in tie dye and a huge smile, playing a harmonica and guitar for his part of the acoustic night. ‘Turtleneck Weather’ and ‘Orbit’ were among the songs he played during his set. To end his time on stage, he had the crowd clap and stomp while he announced his multitude of offerings at his merch stand.

Next up was Griff’s documentary, Warmer Waters. It was about his journey sailing from North Carolina to the Bahamas, where he learned lessons of creativity along the way. After the documentary ended, the acoustic set consisted of a banjo, fiddle, and guitar. Throughout their set they were very interactive with the crowd, fielding questions and giggling amongst each other. During the song ‘Sometimes’ they sang in Spanish which earned quite the cheer from the crowd.

The crowd was encapsulated by their presence, whooping and hollering throughout the performance. Despite the occasional dousing of rain, they remained optimistic and shared their blankets to huddle under together. For the last few songs, they asked the audience to be as quiet as possible so they could come into the center of the crowd and play completely unplugged. Politely agreeing, they sat down and made way for the 3-piece to come into the center. Adorned in flashlights from the crowd, they sang to the audience and the audience hummed back. They closed out the nights with a cover of ‘Country Roads’ where JW came down with his harmonica to join along.
